Ipsilateral Medial and Lateral Discoid Menisci: A Rare Combination of Infrequent Anatomic Variants

Abstract: A discoid meniscus is a thick, disk-shaped meniscus which is prone to tearing, degeneration, and loss of stability in the knee. A discoid meniscus most commonly affects the lateral meniscus, rarely the medial meniscus. Here, we present a case of an extremely rare medial and lateral discoid meniscus in the ipsilateral knee of a 10-year-old male. Ipsilateral medial and discoid menisci are incredibly rare and one must keep this entity in mind to avoid confusion while interpreting knee magnetic resonance imaging.

“…Based on clinical reports, discoid lateral meniscus (DLM) have higher incidence that approximate 0.4% to 17% than discoid medial meniscus (DMM) approximated 0.06% to 0.3% 21 . Besides, many special cases such as bilateral DLM or DMM, ipsilateral lateral and medial DM, and familial DM 12,[22][23][24] . Combining the above views, we hypothesis that the occurrence of DM is related to gene.…”
