IRESE: An intelligent rare-event detection system using unsupervised learning on the IoT edge

Abstract: In the recent years, a rapid growth of IoT devices has been observed, which in turn results in a huge amount of data produced from multiple sources towards the most disparate cloud platforms or the Internet in general. In a typical cloud-centric approach, the data produced by these devices is simply transmitted over the Internet, for consumption and/or storage. However, with the exponential growth in data production rates, the available network resources are becoming the actual bottleneck of this huge data flo… Show more

“…This solution is perfectly tailored for an embedded system, but we are investigating new architectures based on module stacking and flipping, which could optimize the adoption of this interface in term of compactness, module reuse, performance, and power consumption. On the software side, modularity is based on container technologies, and in order to ensure gateway evolvability [ 32 ], we are investigating other solutions that improve cross-platform compatibility, increase application performances such as if it does not run in a container, allow a wider range of application (e.g., an app with a graphical User Interface, UI) and provide a better native support for security [ 33 ].…”

“…Simply put, a gateway is a multipurpose box at the edge to perform the necessary action [60]. A gateway converts, routes, or even processes data.…”

“…Therefore, it can analyze all the packets that pass through it. The choice of the centralized ADS is generally adopted to avoid the placement of ADS modules in constrained devices [ 58 ]. However, energy issue is not an issue for the border router installed in a hospital.…”

“…Indeed, when an anomaly occurs, there is no need to send non-trusted or faulty data. Instead, the ADS logs locally all information about the anomaly and only alarms are reported remotely [ 27 , 58 , 59 ].…”
