IRIS: a novel spectral imaging system for the analysis of cultural heritage objects

Abstract: A new portable spectral imaging system is herein presented capable of acquiring images of high resolution (2MPixels) ranging from 380 nm up to 950 nm. The system consists of a digital color CCD camera, 15 interference filters covering all the sensitivity range of the detector and a robust filter changing system. The acquisition software has been developed in "LabView" programming language allowing easy handling and modification by end-users. The system has been tested and evaluated on a series of objects of Cu… Show more

“…It was first introduced in astronomy and has a wide range of applications such as, remote sensing, paints and coatings 2 , cultural heritage 3,4 and medical sciences 5 . This combination of spectroscopy and imaging results in a three dimensional (3D) space, called a spectral cube, which consists of one spectral and two image dimensions.…”

“…The amount of absorption and scattering per wavelength band is dependent on the coating layer thickness δ and what will be referred to as the extinction coefficient 13 . This approximation holds under the assumption that almost all of the incoming light is transmitted through the first air-coating interface and only the first reflection from inside the material gives a significant contribution to the measured intensity.…”

“…Roughly 25 years ago, HSI made an entrance in the field of non-destructive testing and in the field of cultural heritage 11,12,13,14,15 . In spectroscopy, the intensities of different wavelength components in a beam reflected, scattered or transmitted from or through a sample are measured.…”

“…Other approaches use scanning in the spectral domain by using interference filters mounted on filter wheels [16]. Based on the latest advances, hyperspectral imaging is performed in one full spatial and one full spectral dimension (line spectral imaging).…”
