Irisin is a predictor of sarcopenic obesity in type 2 diabetes mellitus

Abstract: We aimed to evaluate sarcopenia and sarcopenic obesity (SO) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), possible relationships with serum irisin and myostatin levels, and the effect of glycemic control on SO. Ninety T2DM patients were included in this a cross-sectional study. Sarcopenia was determined by evaluating muscle mass (bioelectrical impedance analysis), muscle strength (HGS), and gait speed (GS). Patients with muscle mass loss with functionally reduced muscle strength and/or performan… Show more

“…In older rats, irisin expression was lower than in young rats [ 296 ]. Research in recent years suggests that irisin may be used as a biomarker of sarcopenia and SO and be used in early screening for age-related muscle changes [ 295 , 297 , 298 , 299 , 300 ].…”

“…In addition, circulating irisin levels are lower in the sarcopenia group than in the normal group ( 55 ). Therefore, serum levels of irisin could be used as a biological marker of muscle dysfunction to independently predict the onset of sarcopenia obesity ( 13 , 56 , 57 ). Elderly studies have reported lower levels of irisin in the bloodstream of older people than younger people.…”

“…49 This imbalance in the myokines can also have an effect on fat metabolism, provoking fat gain and insulin resistance. 50 Correspondingly, crosssectional studies show that irisin is downregulated while myostatin is upregulated in both sarcopenia and T2D. 51…”

“…On the contrary, myostatin suppresses muscle cell growth by inducing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), leading to cell damage 49 . This imbalance in the myokines can also have an effect on fat metabolism, provoking fat gain and insulin resistance 50 . Correspondingly, cross‐sectional studies show that irisin is downregulated while myostatin is upregulated in both sarcopenia and T2D 51 …”
