Is acupuncture effective in the treatment of COVID-19 related symptoms? Based on bioinformatics/network topology strategy

Abstract: Acupuncture is an important part of Chinese medicine that has been widely used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases. During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic, acupuncture has been used as a complementary treatment for COVID-19 in China. However, the underlying mechanism of acupuncture treatment of COVID-19 remains unclear. Based on bioinformatics/topology, this paper systematically revealed the multi-target mechanisms of acupuncture therapy for COVID-19 through text mining, bioinformatics, … Show more

“…Acupunctureinduced analgesia through opioid peptides and dopamine receptors. Where acupuncture activates dopamine and β-endorphin, which in turn downregulates cytokine production via type 1 dopamine receptors, so inhibit systemic inflammation [195][196][197][198]. This effect may help in the cytokine storm of COVID-19 infection.…”

“…Promising evidence on the last area can be found, but remains hypothetical. 44 Looking broadly at the sequencing of studies for acupuncture they describe an almost exact opposite sequence than those that TCM herbal medicine will need. Developing and presenting convincing evidence for uses of acupuncture and Chinese TCM herbal medicine will be quite different with different needs.…”

“…It has the effects of anti-inflammation, immunity activation and nervous system modulation. 13 14 At present, acupuncture is widely used as an adjuvant treatment of AS as a characteristic treatment method of Chinese medicine. 15 16 One of the mechanisms of electroacupuncture treatment of AS may be by reducing the expression of CD36 protein and mRNA in AS rabbit macrophages 17…”
