Is Bowen Theory Valid? A Review of Basic Research

Abstract: In the last 15 years, a substantial number of studies have tested the theoretical validity of Bowen family systems theory. A review of this basic research provided empirical support for the relationship between differentiation and chronic anxiety, marital satisfaction, and psychological distress. Bowen's assumption that couples with the same level of differentiation marry was not supported. His specific theories of sibling position and triangulation also received little empirical support. Research on multigene… Show more

“…Since its introduction over 50 years ago into the field of family therapy, Bowen Theory remains a popular approach to working with couples and families in their clinical practice (e.g., Guerin, Fogarty, Fay & Kautto, 1996;Mc Goldrick & Carter, 2001;Schnarch, 1997;Titelman, 1998), with many adopting it as their main theoretical approach to practice (Miller, Anderson, & Keala, 2004). Among the six concepts that constitute Bowen Theory, differentiation of self is considered as fundamental to long-term intimacy, stability, and mutuality in marriage (Bowen, 1978;Kerr & Bowen, 1988;Nichols & Schwartz, 2004;Skowron, 2000).…”

“…A relação entre diferenciação do self e desenvolvimento de carreira ainda é pouco explorada pela literatura científica, mesmo em âmbito internacional (Miller, Anderson, & Keala, 2004). Porém, alguns estudos têm demonstrado associações positivas entre níveis mais elevados de diferenciação do self, tomada de decisão profissional (Larson & Wilson, 1998) e formação da identidade profissional (Johnson, Schamuhn, Nelson, & Buboltz, 2014).…”

“…The results have been mixed and controversial (Miller, Anderson, & Keala, 2004). Some of the constructs of Bowen theory have been supported while others remain at the level of a theoretical postulation.…”
