Epidemiological studies on atopic dermatitis, primarily performed in children, have shown that the one-year prevalence rate of symptoms is population and area dependent. The few studies that have been done in South Africa among children of different age groups showed one-year prevalence rates of 1 -13.3%. In adults, the burden of disease is significant. The prevalence rates and age-related percentages of those affected vary between the countries where studies were undertaken. While about 60% of cases show spontaneous clearing by puberty, the condition may recur in adults.

RESUMEN.-Presentamos los resultados relacionados con la Dermatitis Atópica (DA) del estudio ISAAC III realizado en Quito, Ecuador, en los años 2003 y 2004. El cuestionario internacional valora la presencia de síntomas de eccema en el último año, de eccema diagnosticado, su intensidad y sus relaciones con atopia y el inicio precoz (antes de los 2 años de edad). Encontramos que Quito es una ciudad con alta prevalencia de DA tanto entre los niños de 6 a 7 años de edad como en los adolescentes de 13 a 14 años (95% de confianza, error +/-1.73). Debido a que las formas verdaderamente atópicas, basados en la existencia de fenotipos clínicos de DA, se presentan en el 27% de los niños y en el 7% de los adolescentes, pensamos que hay otros factores que justifican estas prevalencias, como son el clima per-sé, algunas alteraciones medioambientales como la polución, y posibles características genéticas de la barrera física cutánea que permiten sensibilizaciones alérgicas fáciles. PALABRAS CLAVE: Alergia, Dermatitis Atópica, Epidemiología, ISAAC,ABSTRACT.-The results related to Atopic Dermatitis (DA) from ISAAC III studies made in Quito, Ecuador, during the years of 2003 and 2004 are reported in this study. The international questionnaire assesses the presence of symptoms of "current eczema" occurring in the last year, the diagnosed eczema, its intensity and its relationship to atopy, the early onset (before age 2). Quito is a city with high prevalence of DA in both children 6-7, and teens 13-14 years old (95%, error +/-1.73). The atopic phenotype of the disease is present in 27% of children and 7% of teens.
