Is Haptic Feedback Necessary to Microsurgical Suturing? Comparative Study of 9/0 and 10/0 Knot Tying Operated by 24 Surgeons

Abstract: Robotically assisted telemanipulators are often criticised for their lack of direct haptic feedback. However, robotically assisted microsurgical sutures have already been achieved successfully. The aim of this study was to demonstrate that haptic feedback is not necessary in microsurgery. Our series included 24 surgeons of whom 14 were micro-surgeons. Each of them had to tighten a 9/0 and a 10/0 pre-tied nylon thread until getting the sensation of optimal knot tying. The procedure was performed four times, wit… Show more

“…18 Finally, when evaluating the value of the remote console and camera, we found that the magnification of the operating field and the quality of the 3D image are good in the Si HD version of the robot and close to those that one can find in modern surgical microscopes. The millimetric precision provided is acceptable for ocular surface surgeries, such as pterygium surgery, but this precision must be increased to the micron level for intraocular anterior or posterior segment surgeries.…”

“…Brachial plexus surgery involves open microsurgical techniques that require extensive incisions of many centimeters extending from the mastoid process to the upper one-third of the arm 13) . This results in unsightly fibrotic scars and perineural fibrosis, which impairs the quality of functional recovery after nerve repair 14) .…”

“…However, it is suggested that the absence of haptic feedback does not influence the results of many kinds of soft-tissue operations. 17 It is also expected that future robots will even be able to present scaled haptic feedback, solving this problem and improving this perception.…”
