Our research of the literature has convinced us that infantile autism appears to be an illness of Western Civilization, and appears in countries of high technology, where the nuclear family dominates. We indicated that no research studies were located in the U.S.A. on Hispanics, in spite of their large number. Furthermore, it was found to be quite rare among… Show more

“…Although most researchers ignore race, some have challenged the claim of universality of autism among races, reporting a low incidence of autism in many Latin American countries (e.g., Peru, Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela) and in several developing countries such as Kenya, India, and Hungary (Sanua, 1981a(Sanua, , 1981b(Sanua, , 1984. Sanua hypothesized that autism is more prevalent in Western, highly technological countries, where the nuclear rather than the extended family is predominant.…”

“…These observations led Sanua to raise a debate and a pertinent question in 1984 in a paper entitled, "Is infantile autism a universal phenomenon? An open question" (Sanua, 1984 (Sanua, 1984) is yet to be satisfactorily answered because of lack of large scale epidemiological study of autism spectrum disorders in sub-Saharan Africa, evidence accruing through case reports before and after Sanua's question suggest that autism spectrum disorders indeed also occur in the African continent (Longe & Asuni, 1972;Lotter, 1978;Dhadphale et al, 1982;Bakare & Ikegwuonu, 2008). However, many aspects of autism spectrum disorders in Africa remain obscured.…”
