Is intergeneric hybridization in the Leguminosae possible?

Abstract: An examination was made of the validity of intergeneric legume hybrids listed by KNOBLOCH (Taxon 21: 97). Insufficient evidence was found for these supposed crosses, their previous acceptance being due to misleading paper titles, confusion of vegetative with generic hybrids, the occurrence of patrocliny, and misplaced generic boundaries. There is a possibility of hybridization between Pisum and Viciu.

“…The high frequency of recombination in the hybrid further confirms the proximity of the two parental species and suggests that the two species have differentiated through structural alterations of chromosomes (probably translocations). Our findings support the conclusions of some workers (McComb 1975;van der Maesen 198 1 ) that the taxonomic separation of Cujunus and A~l o s i a should not be maintained.…”

“…Long term "variety evolution" should be developed in this direction so that the pea crop would become more selfsupporting, as has been the case inside Phaseolus (Smartt 1976). With this object in view, variability could be widened by crosses between species or by gene transfers (Comb 1975). …”
