Is it Always Chemical When Amino Groups Come Across CO2? Anion–Anion-Interaction-Induced Inhibition of Chemical Adsorption

Abstract: Amino-functionalized ionic liquids (IL) are often applied to fix CO2. However, as far as we know, none of them have ever been reported to exhibit considerable physical CO2 capture. Herein, we describe an amino-functionalized room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium 3-amino-1H-1,2,4-triazolate ([Bmim][ATZ]), with an unusual ultrafast physical CO2 capture at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. Within the time needed for a chemisorbent to reach an equilibrium, 15 adsorption and desorptio… Show more

“…The NMR results indicated the primary reaction of amino-CO 2 and the lesser reaction of phenolate-CO 2 . Tao et al [ 127 ] reported CO 2 capture by amino-functionalized triazolate anion ILs, [Bmim][ATZ] and [Emim][ATZ], with a capacity as low as 0.14 and 0.13 mol CO 2 per mol IL, respectively, via physical interaction.…”

“…Since then, one or two amino-functionalized cations 94,95 and anions [96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103] have been synthesized and investigated. Experimental measurements of CO 2 solubility, 33,104 spectroscopic investigations, 33,104 and numerical simulations 33 indicate that the CO 2 solubility in imidazolium-based IL depends essentially on the nature of the anion, being the cation a secondary player.…”

“…13 By pairing appropriate ions, ILs can be tailored to exhibit different physicochemical properties to meet various target applications. 14,15 Currently, ILs have been used as functionalized materials with the desired features, not just as alternative solvents. 16−22 ILs, thus, can also be considered as "designer liquids".…”

“…Ionic liquids (ILs) are an exciting group of chemical compounds composed entirely of organic cations and organic/inorganic anions . By pairing appropriate ions, ILs can be tailored to exhibit different physicochemical properties to meet various target applications. , Currently, ILs have been used as functionalized materials with the desired features, not just as alternative solvents. ILs, thus, can also be considered as “designer liquids”. As a result of negligible vapor pressure, they are classified as green alternatives.…”
