Is Labor Green?

Abstract: In this article, we assess whether unionization of national workforces influences growth in national carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per capita. Political-economic theories in environmental sociology propose that labor unions have the potential to affect environmental conditions. Yet, few studies have quantitatively assessed the influence of unionization on environmental outcomes using cross-national data. We estimate multilevel regression models using data on OECD member nations from 1970 to 2014. Results from… Show more

“…Some research exists that suggests that better working conditions may attenuate environmental harm. Nations with stronger labor unions, and subsequently better workers' health and safety regulations, tend to have reduced greenhouse gas emissions comparatively [78]. In addition, cross nationally both DCs and LDCs with longer working hours tend to consume more energy and emit more CO 2 [79].…”

“…Hence, it is crucial to motivate workers to contribute their knowledge and skills to the conversion process. This is most likely to occur in companies of high workplace democracy and cooperatives (Alvarez et al 2019) because workers suspect less that the transformation process is used by company management as a vehicle of rationalization for company profit at the expense of worker rights. In addition, regional transformation councils that take on board citizens beyond a single plant or company can overcome existing actor networks and establish opportunities for new cooperations, a prerequisite for new products (Pichler et al 2021).…”

“…The capitalist system promotes profit growth through technical progress and environmental degradation from a theoretical standpoint. All this results in job losses, necessitating more production, the development of new jobs, and, eventually, the provision of additional finances to clean up the environment (Gould et al 2008;Alvarez et al 2019). The term "production treadmill" is used when labor plays a critical role in speeding the production and accumulation (Gentry, 2009).…”
