Is quadriceps muscle strength a determinant of the physical function of the elderly?

Abstract: [Purpose] To determine the relationships of the quadriceps rate of torque development and the time to peak torque with the physical function of the elderly. [Subjects and Methods] Twenty-one subjects participated in this study. Quadriceps strength was measured using isometric and isokinetic torque tests. Time to peak torque and rate of torque development were calculated from the torque time curve of the isokinetic and isometric torque tests, respectively. Physical activities were measured using 4 physical acti… Show more

“…These findings vary in part from prior work, potentially due to differences in populations, how RTD is calculated, or types of performance measures. In a small study of older adults aged 65–80, (38.1% male; n = 21), Altubasi found that knee extension RTD assessed as time from onset to peak torque, rather than by 50 ms epoch, was moderately correlated with stair climbing ( r = −0.57) but not with the timed up and go, ramp up, or 4 m walk with usual pace tests . In patients affected by multiple sclerosis (26% male; n = 35), Kjolhede et al .…”

“…In a previous study, impaired stair-climbing ability was associated with quadriceps weakness in elderly populations [ 39 ]. The average stair climbing speed of individuals who have undergone TKA was two times slower than that of the age-matched non-arthritic healthy population [ 28 ].…”
