Is redo percutaneous mitral balloon valvuloplasty (PMV) indicated in patients with post-PMV mitral restenosis?

Abstract: Repeat PMV for post-PMV mitral restenosis results in good immediate and long-term outcome in patients with low echocardiographic scores and absence of comorbid diseases. Although the results are less favorable in patients with suboptimal characteristics, repeat PMV has a palliative role if the patients are not surgical candidates.

“…It has been shown that percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty can be accomplished with the same efficiency or at least with good results in groups of patients who undergo the procedure for either postsurgical mitral commissurotomy restenosis 9,[23][24][25] or postpercutaneous mitral valvuloplasty restenosis 26 .…”

“…The percentage of severe multiple percutaneous mitral dilatation after mitral regurgitation varies from 2% to 10% in the literature. [15][16][17][18] Aortic valve disease was found in 43.9% of our patients. Abstentions affected 3.51% of patients, while surgery was indicated for 40.39% of patients, and consisted of aortic valve replacement in 97.8% of cases, aortic plasty (1.7%), or prosthetic reinsertion (0.5%).…”

“…Finally, repeat PMC is the sole option in patients with contraindications for surgery. 22 Follow-up studies have shown that the degree of mitral regurgitation remains on the whole stable or decreases slightly during follow-up. Atrial septal defects are likely to close later in the majority of cases.…”
