Is the alien species Clepsis peritana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) settling in Italy?

Abstract: Clepsis peritana (Clemens, 1860) is a native species of North America that has been accidentally introduced in Europe in 80's. This species was mentioned as occurring in Gibraltar, Spain, Denmark and Italy, but no precise collecting data were provided. The presence of the garden tortrix, Clepsis peritana, in Italy is confirmed by a single specimen collected in Central Italy (Umbria region) that is identified by both external characters and dissection of the male genitalia.

“…The insect order Lepidoptera is the second-largest insect order and this insect order consists of moths and butterflies (each is titled lepidopterans). About one hundred and eighty thousand species of the Lepidoptera are defined, in one hundred and twenty-six families and forty-six superfamilies ten percent of the whole defined classes of dwelling animals [18] [19].…”

“…Pempeliella cortella is cited for northern Italy and Sardinia, while dilutella for the north of Italy and the isles, Sicily and Sardinia. Recently, P. dilutella, but still considered as inscriptella, was also recorded in an ongoing survey of the Lepidoptera fauna in central (Pinzari, 2009, Pinzari et al, 2010Pinzari and Sbordoni, 2013;Pinzari et al, 2013aPinzari et al, , 2013bPinzari et al, , 2015Pinzari, 2016aPinzari, , 2016bPinzari et al, 2016aPinzari et al, , 2016bPinzari et al, , 2017aPinzari et al, , 2017bPinzari et al, , 2018aPinzari et al, , 2018bPinzari et al, , 2019aPinzari et al, , 2019bPinzari, 2019;Pinzari & Pinzari, 2019) and southern Italy (Scalercio, 2016). According to Leraut (2001), to clarify our understanding of the distribution of these species in Italy and also verify the goodness of the historical faunistic information in the literature of the last century, we studied dissecting recentlycollected specimens in our collection and other private collections of central Italy and examining specimens from all Italian regions in ancient collections in "Museo civico di Zoologia di Roma" and "Museo di Zoologia dell'Università la Sapienza di Roma".…”
