Is there a search in fixed-set memory search?

Abstract: We discuss the hypothesis that structural factors in the fixed-set memory-search task may contribute to the standard linear set-size effect typically observed in this task. We constructed a lexical decision task that contained the same structural factors as the memory-search task. Two structural factors are discussed: (1) the priming of the probe by the memory set, and (2) the confounding of repetitions per item with set size. Our experiment demonstrated that these structural factors playa role in the set-size… Show more

“…Strayer and Kramer's (1990) demonstration, just discussed, suggests that varied mapping memory search requires a systematic processing of nontargets. Although in memory search it has been debated whether a search per se is occurring (Shulman, 1990;Stadler & Logan, 1989), the search construct is much employed (e.g., Fisk & Ackerman, 1988;Johnson & Carnot, 1990; Wijers, Mulder, Okita, & Mulder, 1989).…”

“…This finding appears not to have been considered by advocates of strength-based theories of performance in this task (e.g., Dosher, 1989, who believe that recency across trials is one determinant of RT, and Hockley & Murdock, 1987). Nor have these findings been considered by those who argue that repetition priming plays a role in the fixed-set procedure (Jou, 2014;Stadler & Logan, 1989).…”

“…Although Shiffrin and Schneider assumed a great deal of communality between the processes underlying visual search and memory search, we suspect they may be quite different. Some factors that affect memory-search performance may not appear at all in visual search tasks (see, e.g., Stadler & Logan, 1989). Specifically, the category comparison strategy may not be important in visual search (also see Cheng, 1985).…”
