Is there an association between PONV and chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting?

Abstract: A substantially stronger interrelationship was found between non-PONV and non-CINV than between both PONV and CINV. This may suggest that certain patients, instead of being prone to nausea and vomiting, in fact in some way are protected against these unpleasant side effects.

“…Chemotherapy‐induced nausea and vomiting(CINV) is estimated to occur in 30–90% of patients depending on the type of chemotherapeutic agent used . Additionally, CINV is strongly related to PONV, and previous PONV (a strong predictor of the symptom) is a predictor of CINV . The hypothesis that CINV could add predictive power to Apfel's heuristic for PONV is based on these facts.…”

“…Recent studies have demonstrat that previous history of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) may contribute to increase the risk of PONV (61). Conversely, there is also evidence showing that patients who have not presented PONV after general anesthesia do not experience CINV either because of different mechanisms including genetic predisposition (47,(61)(62)(63)(64)(65).…”
