Is Transient Global Amnesia a Network Disease?

Abstract: Background: We evaluated a brain network using graph theoretical analysis and microstructural abnormalities of the white matter in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). Methods: Twenty patients with TGA and healthy control subjects were recruited, and they underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans. Graph theory was applied to obtain network measures based on DTI data. We investigated the network measures and microstructural abnormalities of white matter using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) … Show more

“…Such findings are in agreement with neuropsychological studies demonstrating a selective disorder of episodic memory in TGA without impairment of other components of memory. 18,19 Indeed, as suggested by previous SPECT, PET, tract-based spatial statistics, and fMRI studies, 10,[12][13][14][20][21][22] the present study leads to the concept of TGA as a network disease.…”

“…Finally, several studies using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) investigations found that many cerebral regions showed decreased connectivity in patients with TGA compared with healthy subjects, suggesting that in patients with this disease there would be a reorganization of the brain network hubs [ 64 , 100 , 101 ].…”

“…Additionally, a DTI study has demonstrated the disrupted neuronal integrity in the cingulum fibers in patients with TGA [18]. Graph theory analysis using DTI MRI has been also applied to discover changes of structural connectivity in patients with TGA [19]. It has showed hubs reorganization, especially brain regions related with default-mode network, in TGA compared with healthy controls.…”
