Ischaemic enterocolitis: an expression of the intravascular coagulation syndrome

Abstract: SUMMARY In 20 cases of ischaemic enterocolitis unassociated with lesions of major vessels, fresh thrombi were found in the small vessels of the bowel wall and were widespread in other tissues. The capillaries of the renal glomeruli and vessels in the lung were the commonest sites. Pseudo-membranous enterocolitis is shown to be an early or more slowly evolving but identical entity to other forms of so-called ischaemic enterocolitis. This is a condition which includes ischaemic enterocolitis, postoperative enter… Show more

“…Two major mechanisms are proposed for NOMI. Most investigators believe that it is caused by mesenteric vasoconstriction [18,19], while others have postulated that it is a manifestation of DIC [20,21]. Furthermore, shock, dehydration and/or increased abdominal pressure may also be associated with NOMI pathogenesis in pancreatitis patients.…”

“…Various investigators have reported remarkably good results using combination cytotoxic treatment in late breast cancer in recent years,'-3 and some have suggested that traditional endocrine measures may have little further part to play. 4 Many such results have come from uncontrolled series, which, combined with arguments that the side effects of cytotoxic treatment are greater and the duration of remission is shorter than with endocrine treatment, has reduced the credibility of the chemotherapists' claims. We therefore decided to design a prospective trial comparing these two approaches to management.…”

“…On the other hand [3,4], a severe steatonecrosis can directly determine vascular thrombosis. Other authors [9,10] sustained that the fre quently observed DIG in necrotizing pancreatitis might predispose to mucosal infarction. The small bowel and mesentery seem to be less vulnerable than the colon to the devastating effect of the diffusion of peripancreatic necrosis as well as to ischemic lesion.…”
