Isognomon bicolor (C. B. Adams, 1845) (Mollusca: Bivalvia): first record of this invasive species for the States of Paraíba and Alagoas and new records for other localities of Northeastern Brazil

Abstract: This study provides the first record of the exotic invasive bivalve Isognomon bicolor for the State of Paraíba, Northeastern Brazil. It has been found to occur in at least twelve coastal reefs along the coast. We also present its first record for the State of Alagoas and new record localities for the States of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco, including its occurrence in hypersaline estuaries. From these records the distribution range of I. bicolor has been expanded to the littoral region of Northeast Brazil… Show more

“…The Tubarão River estuary includes mangroves as well as algal and seagrass beds and contains a great availability of microhabitats (Dias et al ., ). Although this is a region of socioeconomic significance, reflected in the conflicts of interest related to land use as oil fields, salt farms and shrimp farms, as well as by the wind industry and for occupation (Dantas et al ., ), this estuary has not yet been affected by major environmental changes and human disturbances.…”

“…In the other hand, many researchers recorded I. bicolor in the coast of the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Bahia, Pernambuco, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará and Piauí (Domaneschi & Martins, 2002;Loebmann et al, 2010, Zamprogno et al, 2010Rocha-Barreira et al, 2010;Martinez, 2012;Dias et al 2013;Oliveira & Creed 2008;Gomes andSilva 2013, andSantos et al, 2015). About Brazilian Southern coast, the most established population of I. bicolor is at Zimbros Beach in Santa Catarina state (Domaneschi & Martins 2002), approximately 370 Km away straight from Tramandaí Beach in the Rio Grande do Sul.…”

“…As there are disagreements about the identification of Isognomon species (Domaneschi & Martins, 2002), its current distribution on the Brazilian coast is not well established. However I. bicolor can be considered an invasive organism based on population size (Martinez, 2012) and has been recorded to North, Northeast and Southwest and more recently to the South of Brazil (Domaneschi & Martins, 2002;Loebmann et al, 2010;Martinez, 2012;Dias et al, 2013, Santos et al, 2015.…”

“…The publication of biological information based on material deposited in the CIPY occurred punctually until the year 2000 (Young & Christoffersen 1984;Veloso & Melo 1993;Melo & Veloso 2005). Papers were produced more systematically since 2008, dealing with diverse groups, such as Crustacea (Riul et al 2008;Rodrigues et al 2009), Polychaeta (Santos et al 2008(Santos et al , 2010(Santos et al , 2011(Santos et al , 2014de Assis et al 2007de Assis et al , 2008ade Assis et al ,b, 2012Brito et al 2013), Echinodermata (Gondim et al 2013a(Gondim et al ,b, 2015Prata et al 2012Prata et al , 2014aPrata et al ,b, 2016, and Mollusca (Dias et al 2013;Lima et al 2013Lima et al , 2017aLima & Guimarães 2015;, include inventories of benthic macrofauna (Gondim et al 2011) and biological associations (Lima et al , 2017b. However, most of the available information has not been published in scientific journals, having been cited only in monographies, dissertations, thesis and congress/conference abstracts, which makes access to this information more difficult for the scientific community.…”
