Isolated ulcerative skin lesion caused by Salmonella Weltevreden

Abstract: Salmonella enterica serovar Weltevreden is not a commonly isolated serotype in India. We report isolation of Salmonella Weltevreden, from an unusual site-an ulcer on the gluteal region of a patient who had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery. To our knowledge, Salmonellae have never been reported to cause isolated ulcerative lesions on the skin. This is the first report of an isolated ulcerative lesion on the skin caused by Salmonella Weltevreden. Our findings indicate that there may be modes of pathogene… Show more

Weltevreden involving many nursing students had been occurred in our institute due to a non vegetarian dish, in a get togthrer. 25 E Enteritidis is usually causing extra intestinal manifestations and reported as aetiological agents of Septic arthritis, 26 complicated Aortic aneurism, meningitis, 27 polyserositis, arthritis following trauma in a child with Thalassemia Major.…”

“…Cutaneous infections caused by Salmonella are exceedingly rare occurrences. Only a few reports have documented cutaneous manifestations in patients with S. enterica infection ( Marzano et al., 2003 ; Desikan et al., 2009 ; Wiegand et al., 2009 ; Alfouzan et al., 2017 ). In our study, we observed that S. Thompson strain JNQH950 isolated from the skin secretion displayed a remarkable capacity for robust biofilm formation.…”

“…Salmonella is a gram-negative bacterium that has been classified in more than 2600 serovars with different phenotypic profiles [1,2]. Although Salmonella non-typhoidal infection is mainly related to gastrointestinal symptoms in humans, the bacteria have also been isolated from skin lesions [3] and several cases of meningitis [4]. An important trait of gram-negative species is the presence of an outer membrane that protects the cell against harsh extracellular milieu [5].…”
