Isolation and characterization of pathogenic Vibrio alginolyticus from diseased postlarval abalone, Haliotis diversicolor supertexta (Lischke)

Abstract: Outbreaks of serious mortality among cultured abalone postlarvae have occurred across Southern China since July 2002. Five motile bacterial strains were isolated from diseased abalone postlarvae on tryptic soy agar supplemented with 1% NaCl (TSA1) and/ or thiosulphate citrate bile salt (TCBS) sucrose agar plates during an outbreak in August 2003 in Shanwei, Guangdong province. All isolates were characterized and identi¢ed asVibrio alginolyticus on the basis of biochemical characteristics and comparisons with t… Show more

“…Diseases and mass mortality among cultured abalone have been reported by different pathogens such as: withering syndrome in Haliotis diversicolor supertexta by Vibrio parahemolyticus [14]; disease in post-larval abalone H. diversicolor supertexta by pathogenic Vibrio alginolyticus [15]; disease amyotrophia in Nordotis discus discus by virus [16]. However, there was no report on characterization and expression of SOCS-2 gene to date in mollusk.…”

“…Most of the bacterial diseases in bivalves are reported by Gram-negative bacteria and mostly from the genus Vibrio[24]. Furthermore, several Vibrio[14,15,25] and other bacterial strains[26] were associated with mass mortality of abalone. Therefore, in bacteria challenge experiment, we have included the two Vibrio strains (V. alginolyticus, V. parahemolyticus) and one Gram-positive bacteria L. monocytogenes.…”

“…Although most studies have focused on Vibrio anguillarum as an etiological agent, other members of the genus Vibrio, such as V. alginolyticus, have also been implicated in epizootics of cultured and wild marine fishes throughout the world as well as with disease in larval and juvenile bivalve molluscs and crustaceans (Zorilla et al 2003a, Xie et al 2005, Cai et al 2006, Jayaprakash et al 2006. The knowledge of virulence properties of this emergent species could be useful for designing adequate prophylactic and antimicrobial treatments.…”

“…Bacterial infection is likely to be an important factor in this mortality (Nicolas et al 2002, Handlinger et al 2005. Different types of Vibrio infections leading to abalone death over a wide geographical area have been reported, including V. alginolyticus, V. parahaemolyticus and V. vulnificus isolated from H. diversicolor (Wang et al 1999, Liu et al 2000, Cai et al 2006, V. carchariae (V. harveyi) from H. tuberculata (Jean-Louis et al 2002, Nicolas et al 2002, and V. fluvialis and V. harveyi from H. discus hannai (Li et al 1998, Austin 2010.…”
