Isolation and characterization of polyphenols from Euphorbia heterophylla L. (Euphorbiaceae) leaves

Abstract: Many of Euphorbiaceae species are recognized as traditional medicinal plants and the oils and latex of many species have also economic importance. In fact, Euphorbia heterophylla L., belonging to this family and popularly known in Brazil as “leiteira”, “flor-de-poetas” and wild poinsettia, has been used traditionally in Africa and India to treat many kinds of health disorders. However, the chemical composition of this species has been little studied so far. In the present investigation, the flavonoids quercitr… Show more

“…Liquid chromatography (LC) and high-performance LC (HPLC) have been widely employed to separate and isolate chemical reference materials, especially at semipreparative and preparative scales 6,7,8 . Procedures for obtaining acylglycerol-rich material have been investigated by our group, mainly involving solid phase extraction for analytical purposes or open column chromatography when a large scale was intended.…”

“…These metabolites were diluted in deuterated solvent, methanol (CD3OD) or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO-d6) (Cambridge Isotope Laboratories -Massachusetts, USA). The 1 H and 13 C spectra and the homonuclear COSY and heteronuclear HSQC and HMBC correlation maps obtained were processed using the TopSpin 6.3.2 software (Bruker -Rheinstetten, Germany) and the data were compared with the literature for identification ( (Lu & Yeap Foo 1999;Xu et al 2005;Xu et al 2013;Trinh et al 2015;Guo et al 2018;Tostes et al 2019). Displacements were recorded in dimensionless δ values (ppm), considering the solvent signal as an internal reference.…”

“…Since all Euphorbia parts accumulate these constituents, the stems, aerial parts, roots, fruits, seeds, flowers and in some cases the whole plant are usually investigated. The aerial part is commonly studied since it is known to contain different phenolic compounds, especially flavonoids [44][45][46]. However, isolation of these constituents is a complex procedure, because they occur in small quantities as complex mixtures of sugars with similar or related structural parent skeletal framework.…”
