Isolation and frequency reconfigurable compact MIMO antenna for wireless local area network applications

Abstract: In this study, to design a compact four‐port multiple‐input–multiple‐output (MIMO) antenna for dual‐band wireless local area network applications, both frequency and isolation between antennas are made as reconfigurable. Both antenna element and decoupling network shown in this study are designed using meander line concept. The frequency reconfigurable capability of the antenna is achieved by incorporating positive‐intrinsic‐negative (PIN) diodes in the meander line resonator. By making PIN diodes ON and OFF, … Show more

“…Moreover, the same decoupling circuit performs well in both the bands of two states, which makes it further compact. The proposed design is 98.6%, 70.2%, 37.3%, 82.9%, 77%, 92%, and 82% smaller than the ones reported in References , respectively. These all characteristics of the proposed MIMO antenna makes it suitable for adaptive small form factor devices.…”

“…However, compared with other RF switches, it requires a high-control voltage and has a slow switching speed and a limited life cycle. Extensive studies on various kinds of reconfigurable antennas with electronic switching components are introduced in [39][40][41][42][43].…”

“…Integration of the antenna module corresponding to a MIMO design in handheld portable devices is much more challenging than single element integration with motherboard. It must also be observed that patterns must be significantly distinct with low isolation which becomes challenging for design at low frequency with spatially and electrically closed environment [7].…”
