Isolation by distance in Middle Dalmatia—Yugoslavia

Abstract: Parameters of Malécot's isolation-by-distance model are estimated for biological (anthropometric head and body dimensions, morphometric dimensions of metacarpal bones, quantitative and qualitative dermatoglyphic traits, and physiological/cardiorespiratory/variables) and linguistic distances and migrational kinship on the island of Korcula and the Peljesac peninsula in Middle Dalmatia, Croatia, Yugoslavia. Resulting parameters and the fit of the model are compared, for both regions, as well as with results of s… Show more

“…Their ethnic history, demography, population biology and genetic structure have been investigated for more than 50 years (Bennett et al 1983;Rudan et al 1987;Waddle et al 1998;Tolk et al 2001;Barać et al 2003). The chosen islands are known for their reproductive isolation and consanguinity.…”

“…Such a finding was expected, since the analyzed period of marital migrations postdates the establishment of surnames on the island (Rudan et al, 1987b). However, the correlation of migrational kinship and kinship determined from surnames was the greatest for the migrational period 1850-1891; subsequently, it rapidly decreased.…”

“…A detailed description of the ethnohistory of the island and region has already been reported (Rudan, 1972(Rudan, , 1975Rudan et al, 1982aRudan et al, ,b, 1987bRudan et al, , 1990Rudan et al, , 1992Rudan et al, , 1994Sujoldžić, 1982;Š imić and Rudan, 1990;Martinović et al, 1995;and Marković, 1996). Some of the most important facts with a major impact on a formation of population structure are briefly reviewed subsequently.…”

In addition, the migrationderived value of Malecot's "a" parameter (0.0012) is among the lowest recorded in continental Europe.…”
