“…There is some doubt about certain virus-associated kidney diseases of the fowl (Waller, 1942;Watanabe, 1952) but Purcell et al (1976) believed that the "transmissible tubulonephrosis" of Itakura and Kawai (1972) was, in fact, IB nephritis. Contrary to the interpretation of Cumming (1964), the author believes that the condition described in detail by Newton and Simmons (1963), in which a transmissible embryolethal virus was isolated but not identified, was a case of IB nephritis.…”

“…The aetiology is still unknown but many causes have been suggested from the weather and seasonal influences (van Ness, 1953) to nutritional factors such as new wheat (Quigley, 1943;O'Neal and Rae, 1944) and virus infection (Waller, 1942;Watanabe, 1952). These points were fully reviewed by Maas (1960) and require no further discussion here but it should be pointed out that there is some evidence of a genetic variation in the susceptibility to pullet disease (Cole, 1950;Moultrie et al, 1954) as there is to "uric nephritis" (Hicks, 1958) and renal disease of the fowl generally (Biely and March, 1958).…”

“…Similar syndromes believed to be identical are: pullet disease (Jungherr and Levine, 1940); bluecomb disease (Bullis, 1940); contagious indigestion ; avian monocytosis (Jungherr and Matterson, 1944); and avian infectious diarrhea (Watanabe et al, 1952). Waller (1942) and Watanabe (1952) have reported a virus etiology for this disease in chickens.…”

“…While a filterable agent was isolated from American outbreaks of the acute form of the disease (Waller 1942(Waller , 1944a(Waller , by 1945 this work was not developed. A virus was isolated from affected birds in Japan (Wantabe et al 1952 a 8t b) who named the condition avian infectious diarrhoea.…”
