“…When nearly dry, the extract was transferred to a small tube, and evaporation com¬ pleted under a stream of nitrogen. The assay procedure was that of Simpson & Tait [1952] and is based on changes in the ratio of radioactive sodium to potassium in the urine of adrenalectomized rats. Samples: E, F and is a mixture of cortisone, 17-hydroxycorticosterone and corticosterone respec¬ tively; Aid., 5µg aldosterone; Ext., re-chromatography of the extract from cut 2 of a previous chromatogram of rat adrenal effluent in this system (see text).…”

“…greatly in excess of what could be accounted for by the content of any known adrenal steroid or combination of adrenal steroids (114,38,37). They showed further that the mineralocorticoid activity similar to that in adrenal extracts was also present in adrenal venous blood (99), thus adding great strength to the assumption that a true hormone was involved.…”

“…As these studies progressed, we were impressed by the similarity of the findings of other investigators (18)(19)(20) on the highly active mineralocorticoid of adrenal cortical extract. This material appears to be very similar, if not identical, with the sodium-retaining corticoid of urine.…”

“…This material appears to be very similar, if not identical, with the sodium-retaining corticoid of urine. The only important discrepancy concerned absorption of ultraviolet light near 240 mu (18); this has been resolved by the finding of such absorption in later preparations from adrenal cortical extract (16). These points of similarity between the corticoid from adrenal cortex and from urine, prepared from different sources by different methods, and showing consistent activity during purification, support the idea that both preparations contain a natural hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex and appearing in urine in measurable amounts under the observed conditions.…”
