R E S U M I~A multiscale model for shrinkage of cement paste and concrete that links properties at the nanometer, micrometer and millimeter level is proposed. Each parameter of the model at a particular scale level has fundamental physical meaning. The model is used to determine values of shrinkage, bulk modulus, and volume fraction of the constituent phases, and these values are then used to model shrinkage of concrete. Agreement with experimental results is satisfactory and new insight into properties of paste is gained at the micron level.

Although some important advances in the modeling of sorption and hygrothermal deformations of nanoporous materials such as hydrated cement paste, shale, coal, and some other rocks and soils have already been made, a comprehensive nanoporomechanics theory remains elusive. Here we strive to formulate it based on Gibb’s free energy of the solid–fluid system and on the recently derived Nguyen–Rahimi–Bažant (NRB) isotherm, which corrects the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) isotherm for the effect of hindered adsorbed water in filled nanopores and extends through the capillary range up to saturation. The challenge is to capture all of the basic types of relevant published experimental data, including 1) a complete sorption isotherm of hydrated cement paste (including the capillary range), 2) pore size distribution, 3) autogenous shrinkage, 4) drying shrinkage and swelling, 5) water loss or humidity change due to heating, 6) thermal expansion at various humidities, and 7) water loss of specimens caused by compression. The previous models can fit only a few data types. The present model fits all of them. It is ready for computer simulations needed to minimize the deleterious moisture effects on long-time deformations, cracking damage, and fracture in concrete infrastructure and thereby to reduce indirectly the enormous carbon footprint of concrete. Adaptations to shale, coal beds, etc., are possible.

The shrinkage mechanisms of portland cement paste were investigated from shrinkage, weight loss, and pore structure measurements using nitrogen sorption and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Thin samples (2.3 mm) of well-hydrated (165 d) pastes of 0.4 and 0.6 water-to-cement (W/C) ratios were dried directly from saturated surface dry state to 75%, SO%, 11%, and 0% relative humidity (rh). From equilibrium shrinkage vs calculated increase in surface free energy curves two active stress mechanisms were identified. The GibbsBangham (surface free energy) effect is the major stress mechanism, which is active in the entire rh range investigated, whereas the capillary stress effect is active above 25% rh. From elastic modulus calculations it can be concluded that true Gibbs-Bangham shrinkage accounts for only 33% of total first drying shrinkage. Thus nearly 67% of first drying shrinkage may be due to a decrease in interlayer spacing caused by Gibbs-Bangham and capillary induced stresses. Further, nitrogen measures the true external surface area, and total external pore volume can be obtained from combined measurements using nitrogen sorption and MIP.
