Issues and Challenges in Short Food Supply Chains: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract: Consumers increasingly prefer more direct and more transparent food distribution channels, such as short food supply chains (SFSCs). Nonetheless, SFSCs face a variety of issues and challenges in their creation and functioning, resulting in limited performance and sustainability, as well as in difficulties of upscaling. This study aims at improving our understanding of SFSCs’ issues/challenges through a systematic review of the most recent literature. We perform a full-text content analysis of 44 studies, looki… Show more

“…For example, in the United Kingdom, recent events such as Brexit, the COVID-19 pandemic, and global logistical issues with shipping have demonstrated the fragility of supply chains across borders (Coleman et al 2022;Zurayk et al 2022). LED lighting, as mentioned throughout this review, can extend the growing period of crops in greenhouses and allow for year-round production in controlled environments, increasing the production of locally grown produce, which is generally less susceptible to these issues, although not totally problem free (Bayir et al 2022).…”

“…Organic producers are more likely to sell their products through SFSCs, mainly FMs, than non-certified producers (Aubert and Enjolras, 2016; Mundler and Laughrea, 2016). For other customers of SFSCs, stronger motivations are animal welfare concerns and a desire to reduce food waste and emissions (Gori and Castellini, 2023; Vitterso et al, 2019; Williams et al, 2015). The demand for more ethical production and consumption practices in Western society has a small but ever-increasing influence on food choice (the question is when these aspects will affect purchasing at FMs).…”

“…Support for local farmers and products is also associated with other types of SFSCs (Gori and Castellini, 2023; Vitterso et al, 2019). Based on the literature, much emphasis is placed on consumer trust, consumer relations, knowledge (e.g., food origin), and information exchange in SFSCs.…”

“…For example, a multi-actor, multifaceted, and connected global strategy can be employed to support the development of sustainable food strategies and to ensure equitable food security [ 7 , 8 ]. In the literature, numerous existing works focus on food security, factors affecting it [ 9 ], challenges and new strategies to endure the food demands, and sustainability of food security [ 9 , 10 ]. Industry 4.0 aims to revolutionize the industrial processes from design to products by integrating information and communication technologies (ICTs) such as IoT, industrial IoT (IIOT), robots, cloud computing, big data analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML) [ 11 ].…”
