“…We found that women’s trajectories to the WHW service and their experiences with self-managed abortion were determined by illegality, stigma, expectations around motherhood and abortion, as well as by personal circumstances. In line with previous analysis about self-managed abortion trajectories in the region, 26–28 including previous studies in Chile, 10 , 11 our results demonstrate that illegality and stigma do not deter women from deciding to interrupt a pregnancy, but make their abortion trajectories and experiences harder and more demanding. WHW’s work in Chile inserts itself into the Latin American feminist tradition of supporting self-care to enable reproductive autonomy and improve abortion access, 29 and has outcomes similar to those of other feminist initiatives in the region.…”

“…The desire for privacy and confidentiality in this study supports an increasing body of evidence documenting people's preferences in abortion care, and that different models of out of clinic care are safe, acceptable, and sometimes preferable for abortion seekers [20][21][22]. This aligns with the World Health Organization Guidelines on Self-care Interventions for Health [23] which confirms that self-managed abortion is medically safe if pregnant individuals have information on effective protocols and access to follow up health care if needed [23].…”

“…In regions with highly restrictive pregnancy termination laws, independent organizations could complement the information provided through governmental channels. Currently, there are good experiences with providing third-party help through telephone hotlines [ 38 ]. As some of the interviewed physicians fear that many women do not approach them for prenatal tests due to prejudices and stigmatization, it is important to provide information and establish communication channels that can be accessed anonymously to serve vulnerable groups.…”
