Janus Suprabead Displays Derived from the Modified Photonic Crystals toward Temperature Magnetism and Optics Multiple Responses

Abstract: The design and development of Janus suprabeads (JSs) with multiple responses are highly desirable in the fabrication of functional nanomaterials. In this work, we report a triphase microfluidic strategy for the construction of JSs with temperature-magnetism-optics triple responses. Initially, macromonomer poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) obtained via catalytic chain transfer polymerization (CCTP) was grafted onto the polystyrene (PS) colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs) surface. Because abundant carboxylic acid gro… Show more

“…As previously reported, PNIPAM‐containing photonic structures involving thin films and spherical supra‐beads can respond to ambient temperatures due to the volume phase transition ability of PNIPAM gels . In our case, the as‐synthesized PC films also remain thermosensitive (Figure S6, Supporting Information).…”

“…Anisotropic colloids including Janus microspheres have been employed in displays and anisotropic, bicolored Janus microspheres have been applied as pigments in electronic paper . As an example, Janus microspheres having black and white hemispheres have been prepared via the in situ polymerization of monomer droplets including pigments, produced using a microfluidic device.…”

“…Perhaps the second most studied application of JPs after emulsion stabilization, and one with similar commercial potential, is their use in multicolored, switchable displays. One recent example is the synthesis of “Janus Suprabeads” (JSs) consisting of CdS quantum dots and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles joined by N‐isopropylacrylamide (NIPam) . The CDS quantum dots exhibit yellow fluorescence under UV light but are otherwise red.…”
