JASIS and library and information science journal rankings: A review and analysis of the last half-century

Abstract: The concept of journal ranking is explained along with the theoretical and practical significance of ranking journals. An eight‐variable model for classifying journal‐ranking studies is outlined. A review of LIS journal rankings of the last half‐century identifies 178 published between 1952 and 1997. The majority of these used some type of citation measure, followed by rankings based on production, subjective judgment, and reading, respectively. Analysis of JASIS's, and its immediate predecessor, American Docu… Show more

“…There have, however, been several bibliometric analyses of specific journals, most notably in the field of library and information science where several of the key journals have been studied in some detail [11][12][13][14]. This short paper provides a bibliometric analysis of JMGM, focusing on the changes that have occurred in the subject over the years, the most productive and most cited authors and institutions, and a comparison of the results obtained with those for other journals that cover similar research areas.…”

Depending on the purpose of evaluation, a method which is suitable for one case may not be suitable for another.…”

“…Nissonger agrees that "a journal's position in the various rankings for its discipline helps define the journal and delineate its role in scholarly communication." 30 He is concerned with flaws in the ranking caused by blending information and library science journals into a single ranking as well as combining titles aimed at different audiences (such as LIS faculty versus library faculty).…”
