Joint Adaptive Modulation and Adaptive MAC Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: This paper introduces cognitive MAC-layer techniques to wireless sensor networks (WSN) to optimize Network survivability. We compare Adaptive Modulation (AM) over flat-fading channels, with data rate and transmit power being varied according to channel conditions with two variants: Adaptive Modulation with Idle mode (AMI) and a new Adaptive Sleep with Adaptive Modulation (ASAM) which dynamically adjusts the transmission and sleep modes based shared global information on channel conditions. These introduced cog… Show more

“…This action can be to adapt transmit power, data rate, or both. Duty cycle adaptation directly follows data rate adaptation, similar to the idea proposed in [12]. If the data rate is increased, the duty cycle is decreased, and vice versa.…”

“…Thus, in one time slot, a node may wake up, sense the medium, transmit one packet, and go back to sleep mode. Moreover, it is assumed that the active portion of the duty cycle is adaptive according to the data rate utilized, similar to the algorithm proposed in [12], which has been previously reviewed in Section 2. If there are redundant nodes in the network, which is probable WSN, not all nodes will wake up in every duty cycle.…”
