Judging in the genomic era: judges’ genetic knowledge, confidence and need for training

Abstract: Genetic information is increasingly used in many contexts, including health, insurance, policing and sentencing—with numerous potential benefits and risks. Protecting from the related risks requires updates to laws and procedures by justice systems. These updates depend to a large extent on what the key stakeholders—the judiciary—know and think about the use of genetic information. This study used a battery of 25 genetic knowledge items to collect data from 73 supreme court judges from the same country (Romani… Show more

“…A large number of genetic questions were used which allowed the assessment of variance in genetic knowledge among participants. This is important because genetics is a complex field and previous research showed that people may have good knowledge in some areas but not in others (Selita, Smereczynska, Chapman, Toivainen, & Kovas, 2020). This study also has limitations.…”

“…The risk to patient privacy is one of the most widely examined ethical subjects in the field of clinical genomics [9,10]. Genomic data can be identifiable [11], and patients are concerned about potential misuse [12] that could lead to potential discrimination [13] by insurance providers or prospective employers, for example.…”
