Objective. The external jugular vein drains a considerable part of the head and neck and constitutes a vessel implicated in vari- ous procedures in the cervical region. The aim of this study is to present an uncommon anatomical variation of the external jugular vein, and discuss the clinical implications of its presence. Case Report. We present a rare case of an ectopic external jugular vein terminating into the axillary vein, that we came across during routine dissection of a male cadaver of Greek origin. Conclusion. The venous system of the external jugular vein is used during procedures for the treatment of various conditions such as cardiac arrhythmias, hydrocephalus and defects of the head and neck. Hence, encountering the unpredictable course of a variant draining into the axillary vein may complicate these interventions, leading to multiple manipulations and undesirable results. Surgeons should be aware of the alternate anatomy of the venous system of the cervical region, and mindful of the pos- sibility of encountering them.

ОБЗОРЫПарестезии верхних дыхательных путей -разновид-ность расстройства чувствительности в глотке, гортани. Клинические проявления парестезий верхних дыхатель-ных путей разнообразны, к ним относятся ощущение «кома в горле» (КГ), першения, покалывания, онемения в глотке, в проекции гортани. Парестезии часто сопровож-даются упорным кашлем, ощущением нехватки воздуха, затруднением глотания, дисфонией.Наиболее часто встречается жалоба на ощущение КГ, значительно ухудшающее качество жизни пациентов [1] -от 4,1 до 5% причин обращений к оториноларингологу [2].В анамнезе 46% практически здоровых людей отмече-ны эпизоды жалоб на ощущение КГ. Пациенты с этим симптомом обращаются за помощью к врачам разных специальностей: оториноларингологам, фониатрам, не-врологам, эндокринологам, гастроэнтерологам. Многие пациенты (78%) консультируются с онкологами, что объ-ясняется выраженной канцерофобией [3]. «Ком в горле» впервые был описан Гиппократом око-ло 2500 лет назад. Background: Internal jugular phlebectasia (IJP), the abnormal dilatation of internal jugular vein, is generally considered a benign anomaly. However, because IJP is uncommon, little is known about its natural history, and currently, no consensus on the best treatment modality is available. Methods: The purpose of this article is to conduct a systematic review of available literature on recently reported IJP cases to understand the main characteristics of IJP and its most frequent therapeutic approaches. Following the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses guidelines, literature search for IJP cases was conducted in the COCHRANE, PUBMED, EBSCOHOST, SCOPUS, OVID, and SCIELO databases. Results: A total of 97 original articles were found, with a total of 247 IJP cases reported including both pediatric and adult patients. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this study is the largest systematic review analyzing all the reported cases of IJP. IJP is considered by most authors as a benign abnormality that predominantly affects the right jugular vein. It is most commonly diagnosed in children. At present, conservative treatment is preferred for pediatric but not for adult patients. Multicenter randomized prospective studies are required to further understand this rare anomaly.
