“Juxtafacet cysts”, a misleading name for cystic formations of mobile spine (CYFMOS)

Abstract: To present 58 cystic space-occupying formations of the spinal canal in 53 cases; these formations are called "juxtafacet cysts". Fifty-Three patients (33 women and 20 men, with an average age of 60.8 years) were evaluated retrospectively by neurosurgery. All of the patients had received simple X-P, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before surgery. The neurological findings were evaluated on admission and in a follow-up review. Surgical intervention was performed on all patients and … Show more

“…The diagnostic tools and treatment of choice are generally agreed for cervical juxtafacet cyst causing neurological symptoms, but the etiology of cervical juxtafacet cysts remains unclear. 4,13,16,17) We treated a patient who presented with progression of a cervical juxtafacet cyst of the right C5-6 accompanied by myelopathy 20 months after undergoing anterior foraminotomy at the same level and anterior cervical discectomy fusion with a cage at the adjacent level.…”

“…Two types of cysts share common symptomatic and radiologic characteristics but different histological background. Therefore, new name has been introduced to replace the "juxtafacet cyst" widely used since Kao first employed 6,12) . Regarding the ganglion cyst, many authors used various names including facet cyst, posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL) cyst, disc cyst or ligament flavum (LF) cyst depending on the origin 1,10,11,19) .…”

“…These cysts form from excessive movement of the facet joint, degeneration and herniation of a joint capsule, rheumatoid arthritis and trauma. Ganglion cysts can develop from synovial cysts that lose their connection to the joint after degeneration or destruction of the synovial lining membrane [13]. Ganglion cysts may also originate from the posterior longitudinal ligament or ligamentum Xavum [2].…”
