The Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) is a 1800 km long volcanic chain, extending SW-NE from the Gulf of Guinea into Central Africa, that lacks the typical age progression exhibited by hot spot-related volcanic tracks. This study investigates the upper mantle seismic structure beneath the CVL and surrounding regions to constrain the origin of volcanic lines that are poorly described by the classic plume model. Rayleigh wave phase velocities are measured at periods from 20 to 182 s following the two-plane wave methodology, using data from the Cameroon Seismic Experiment, which consists of 32 broadband stations deployed between 2005 and 2007. These phase velocities are then inverted to build a model of shear wave velocity structure in the upper mantle beneath the CVL. Results show that phase velocities beneath the CVL are reduced at all periods, with average velocities beneath the CVL deviating more than -2% from the regional average and +4% beneath the Congo Craton. This distinction is observed for all periods but is less pronounced for the longest periods measured. Inversion for shear wave velocity structure indicates a tabular low velocity anomaly directly beneath the CVL at depths of 50 to at least 200 km and a sharp vertical boundary with faster velocities beneath the Congo Craton. These observations demonstrate widespread infiltration or erosion of the continental lithosphere beneath the CVL, most likely caused by mantle upwelling associated with edge-flow convection driven by the Congo Craton or by lithospheric instabilities that develop due to the nearby edge of the African continent.

The textural characteristics of felsic lavas and ignimbrites in the Sabga area along the continental segment of the Came roon Volcanic Line (CVL) are documented in this study. Two rhyolitic lava flows separated by mafic and rhyodacitic lava flows were dated by zircon LA-ICP-MS technique in order to constrain the timescales of successive flow emplace ment as well as magma chamber processes in this volcanic field. The studied samples have rheomorphic characteristics such as eutaxitic textures defined by elongated fiamme as well as deformed and welded glass shards. They exhibit flow banding and contain spherulitic groundmass. Rhyolitic autobreccias and ignimbrites are widespread in the Sabga area, are peralkaline in nature and their ages are broadly similar at ~23.0 ± 0.3 Ma (23.34 ± 0.34 Ma for the ignimbrite and 22.98 ± 0.28 Ma for the rhyolitic autobreccia unit). These ages suggest rapid recharge of magma into a periodically replenished and open chamber. The felsic rocks in the Sabga area and around the Bamenda Highlands are also younger compared to other felsic units along the CVL (29 Ma to 69.4 ± 0.4 Ma).

<p>This study was carried out in the Bambui-Sabga volcanic area in Tubah Sub-Division, North West Region, Cameroon. This research was aimed at carrying out a hydrochemical characterization of springs in the area. Chemical analysis were done using a DR 2010 Hach Spectrophotometer. The analysed spring samples were close to neutral (pH 6.9-7.6) with a high electrical conductivity ranging from 1,400 - 11,400 µS/cm and TDS from 750 - 7,960 mg/l. The FS01 spring recorded the highest average temperature of 34oC, yellowish-brown in colour and rusty odour, while the FS02 spring had a salty taste and soapy feel. The FS02 spring recorded the highest Na+ concentration of 128 mg/l. The analyzed springs can be classified into: thermal spring (FS01), salt spring (FS02) and normal (mineral) spring (FS03). The spring waters showed a (Na+K)-Cl (SO4) facies and are stable with Na-montmorillonite and zeolites, with their mineralisation from evaporation, salt water intrusion and leaching. Physical parameter were enriched in the dry season except for pH, and deficient in cations and anions except NO3- in FS02. In the rainy season, chemical enrichment was higher. The spring waters were not suitable for drinking and should be treated before human consumption.</p>
