Karoo igneous activity, and the early stages of the break-up of Gondwanaland

Abstract: The widespread early Jurassic Karoo vulcanism of southern Africa appears to have been generated from a large-scale mantle plume originating in the sub-lithospheric mantle, but with a considerable additional contribution in some areas of material from the lithosphere. Subduction-related vulcanism may also play a significant role, but the relationships of the two types of vulcanism, if indeed a clear distinction does exist, are at present uncertain. Continental break-up probably took place in two stages, the fir… Show more

“…This has been postulated in almost all published models [Martin and Hartnady, 1986;Kristoffersen and Haugland, 1986;Lawver et al, 1991;Cox, 1992;Elliot, 1992;Grunow, 1993b;Livermore and Hunter, 1996]. We used the Beattie Anomaly ( Figure 7a) and a strong magnetic anomaly along the Heimefrontfjella (SKA-Sverdrupfjella-KirvanveggenAnomaly; Golynsky and Aleshkova, 2000) as starting point for our model.…”

“…3). These are capped by some 1.4 km of basaltic lavas of the Drakensberg Group (Veevers et al, 1994;Johnson et al, 1996), the extrusion of which is related to the break-up of Gondwana (Cox, 1992).…”

“…They show a temporal relationship to continental plate break-up, and particularly characterise the Jurassic-Cretaceous break-up history of Gondwana (e.g. Karoo, Parana-Etendeka continental flood basalts, Ferrar Group and oceanic plateaux: OntongJava, Kerguelen, Manihiki; Coffin and Eldholm, 1994 and references therein; Elliot, 1992;Cox, 1992). Emplacement of continental flood basalt provinces typically occurs over time scales of 10 5 -10 6 years (Coffin and Eldholm, 1994).…”
