Keep your nice friends close, but your rich friends closer — Computation offloading using NFC

Abstract: Abstract-The increasing complexity of smartphone applications and services necessitate high battery consumption but the growth of smartphones' battery capacity is not keeping pace with these increasing power demands. To overcome this problem, researchers gave birth to the Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) research area. In this paper we advance on previous ideas, by proposing and implementing the first known Near Field Communication (NFC)-based computation offloading framework. This research is motivated by the adv… Show more

“…It is important to examine novel D2D communication technologies as well as to examine the effectiveness of an offloading algorithm through real implementations. The study [151] addressed these drawbacks by proposing the first task offloading framework with near field communication (NFC) based D2D communication and a real implementation evaluation. NFC has several advantages over the longer-range Bluetooth and WiFi technologies due to its short communication range, including lower interference, lower energy consumption, and intrinsic security.…”

“…Several PaaS systems have been proposed, mainly addressing how to achieve Quality of Service (QoS) awareness performance [6], [7], [9]- [11], through appropriate helper selection. On the contrary, we propose the CAP to provide ubiquitous (high service success ratio) and Quality of Experience (QoE) like (e.g., disruption duration and frequency) service, through extensive effort to explore human mobility and access handling run by the helpers themselves.…”

“…Up-to-now, the exploration of use cases with different proximal services is ongoing, including cellular traffic offloading [4], opportunistic crowd computing [5], mobile augmented reality [6], mobile crowdsourcing [7], computation offloading [8], [9], target marketing [10] and even block-chain applications [11].…”

“…Most previous works have been done on computing offloading [17][18][19]. The emergence of computing offloading techniques can be traced back to the concept of Cyber Foraging [20], which reduces the computation, storage, and energy of MDs by offloading tasks of MDs to nearby servers with sufficient resources.…”
