As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies become more ubiquitous for streamlining and optimizing work, they are entering fields representing organizational logics at odds with the efficiency logic of automation. One such field is journalism, an industry defined by a logic enacted through professional norms, practices, and values. This paper examines the experience of technologists developing and employing natural language generation (NLG) in news organizations, looking at how they situate themselves and their technology in relation to newswork. Drawing on institutional logics, a theoretical framework from organizational theory, we show how technologists shape their logic for building these emerging technologies based on a theory of rationalizing news organizations, a frame of optimizing newswork, and a narrative of news organizations misinterpreting the technology. Our interviews reveal technologists mitigating tensions with journalistic logic and newswork by labeling stories generated by their systems as nonjournalistic content, seeing their technology as a solution for improving journalism, enabling newswork to move away from routine tasks. We also find that as technologists interact with news organizations, they assimilate elements from journalistic logic beneficial for benchmarking their technology for more lucrative industries.

Organizational and leader-specific components are used to characterize newspaper executives’ positioning toward social media. From an online survey (n=159), Norwegian newspaper executives report on the efficacy of social media, organizational culture, and work-related role stressors. Employing principal components analysis and clustering methods, we identify four leadership types and find wide variation in social media attitudes and usage reflecting organizational strategic needs and capabilities, social media-related frustrations, culture, and competencies and tradition of the newspaper executives.

Like other walks of life, digital media has revolutionized journalism altogether. The internet has made social media a crucial part of contemporary journalistic practices. Different media firms are becoming highly dependent on the content created on different social media platforms. Today media space is accessible to everyone, and one can create and publish their own content, which is available on online platforms such as blogs or social media. As a result of this opportunity, a huge amount of content is published and available on the web, which certainly lacks value and quality. This study explores journalistic practices in the new information arena. This study focuses on research objectives; to locate the scope of digital journalism in the contemporary media industry, to compare the difference created by the new information arena and traditional journalism and to assess the challenges created by the new information and technological revolution towards journalism. Purposive sampling was used to draw a sample from the population, and in-depth interviews were conducted to structure the results of the study. The findings of the study reveal that though a huge difference has been made by contemporary digital journalistic practices, there is a need to reconsider certain things to get full out of this huge opportunity.
