Keloid Formation after Circumcision: A Case Report and Current Literature Review

Abstract: Although penile keloid formation can be seen after major penile surgeries, it is rarely reported after circumcision and there is no standard method for the treatment of this complication. We present a patient who was admitted with a penile keloid mass that occurred after circumcision surgery and discuss the treatment we administered in light of the current literature review. A 7-year-old white boy was admitted to our clinic with a swollen stiff mass on the foreskin six months after circumcision. The parents in… Show more

“…This seems to be related to the grater skin pigmentation of these patients (10) , and it was considered as a potential cause in our patient. Penile keloids have been described in the literature (11) , but in this case, we believe the problem should not be attributed to the patient's own scarring process, since there was an exogenous element justifying the persistence of the penile inflammatory-fibrotic reaction.…”

“…15,24,25 In three of the patients in this review, some therapy was associated prior to surgical treatment, such as corticosteroid infiltration, application and massage with topical corticosteroids or silicone gel, as well as placement of a silicone plate for local compression. 10,15,26 Most patients were submitted to adjuvant therapies, also with corticosteroids and compression therapies, only in the postoperative period. In only one patient described, 7 adjuvant radiation was performed.…”

“…Este hecho, que parece estar en relación con la mayor pigmentación cutánea presente en estas poblaciones (10) , fue considerado en nuestro paciente como posible factor causal. Existen descritos en la literatura los queloides peneanos (11) , pero en este caso creemos que el problema no puede ser atribuido a la cicatrización propia del paciente puesto que había un elemento exógeno que justificaba la persistencia de la reacción fibrótica-inflamatoria en el pene.…”
