Knee extension and flexion strength asymmetry in Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive subjects: a cross-sectional study

Abstract: HighlightsHIV-positive subjects present higher strength indices for the dominant versus the non-dominant leg.Strength asymmetry between limbs was observed in up to 58% of subjects.Lower-limb strength asymmetry is associated with impaired balance and gait.

“…3 In addition, muscle weakness is related to disability. 4,5 Therefore, muscle strength is an important outcome and of great interest with regards to general health. 1 The most common equipment or methods that provide quantitative measures of strength, such as the isokinetic 6---8 and portable dynamometers, 9---11 have been shown to provide valid and reliable measures.…”

“…Moreover, it is a low-cost tool for predicting an individual's overall strength, which can reflect general health conditions and level of physical activity [10]. In fact, muscle weakness and low grip strength have been related to disability and are considered predictors of sarcopenia, higher recovery time, and higher mortality, especially in hospitalized patients [11][12][13][14]. Nevertheless, several populations lack the HGS reference values that are necessary to ensure the health, safety, comfort, and productivity of workers and consumers, as well as for clinical purposes and to monitor recovery after post-injury treatment [15].…”
