Background: The study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge and awareness of glaucoma and their possible determinants in a group of people diagnosed with glaucoma and in a population based group without glaucoma.Methods: The study included people with an age range of 40 to 80years; 410 patients without glaucoma who admitted to primary health care service and 113 patients who admitted to hospitals with diagnosis of glaucoma. In addition to Glaucoma Knowledge Level Questionnaire (GKLQ), participants were asked about their socio-demographic characteristics, level of awareness and resources of the information about glaucoma. Multivariate logistic regression and multiple linear regression analyses were used to assess the variants which have impact on the level of the awareness about glaucoma and to evaluate the factors effective on the score of GKLQ, respectively.Results: The ratio of awareness about glaucoma was found to be 64.1% in people without glaucoma. The knowledge and awareness about glaucoma were found to be higher in glaucoma patients compared to healthy people but not at a desired level. The education level was the only factor effecting both awareness and knowledge about glaucoma.Conclusions: As awareness about glaucoma can lead to early detection, the assessment of the knowledge and awareness about glaucoma is very important in terms of disease prevention. Health education and preventive health care services should be programmed including for both glaucoma patients and healthy people based on the level of their education.

Background In the absence of adequate services, patients have to rely on the few health professionals that they do come into contact with to advise them on their treatment options. The aim of this study was to determine the level of awareness and knowledge of glaucoma, and the association between these factors and self‐care practices among final year health science university students in Ghana. Method A cross‐sectional survey involving the use of a structured questionnaire was conducted among 273 final year students (67 per cent) studying at any one of eight health science programs in three selected public universities in Ghana. Results All 273 respondents were aware of glaucoma but only 37.7 per cent had knowledge of it. The majority (65.9 per cent) defined glaucoma as raised intraocular pressure, and confused glaucoma with ocular hypertension. Over half (56.8 per cent) had acquired their knowledge of glaucoma during the course of their training. The media also played a major role in glaucoma awareness; however, it played a limited role in impacting on the knowledge of glaucoma. Only 28.6 per cent of respondents had previously undergone glaucoma screening. Conclusion Although all respondents were aware of glaucoma, their level of knowledge of glaucoma was low. Self‐care practices were also generally poor among the respondents. This information may be useful for glaucoma health education in Ghana.

G Ge er re eç ç v ve e Y Yö ön nt te em ml le er r: Çalışmaya primer açık açılı glokom tanılı 188 hasta dâhil edildi ve 13 soruluk bir anket uygulandı. Hastaların glokom damlalarını önerilen doz, zaman ve aralıklarla damlatıp damlatmadıkları, ilaçlarını kullanırken yardım alıp almadıkları ve tedaviye uygun süre devam edip etmedikleri sorgulandı ve kaydedildi. Tespit edilen uyumsuzluk nedenlerinin eğitim düzeyleri ile ilişkisi değerlendirildi. Glokom hastalarının eğitim düzeyleri ile hastalıkları hakkındaki bilgi düzeyleri, takip ve tedaviye uyumları arasındaki ilişki araştırıldı. Hastaların eğitim düzeyleri ile hastalık hakkında bilgi sahibi olma, takip ve körlük gelişme riski hakkındaki farkındalıkları arasında istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir ilişki saptandı (p<0,001).
