Knowledge Connectivity in an Adverse Context: Global Value Chains and Pakistani Offshore Service Providers

Abstract: This paper contributes to theory building efforts around the concept of knowledge connectivity and its relevance in buyer-supplier relationships in global value chains. We use the Pakistani IT industry as our study context. Pakistan suffered a significant adverse perception bias following terror attacks in 2008-09. We based our illustration on the experiences of 12 Pakistani offshore service providers (OSPs) who succeeded in offsetting the negative implications of the country's adverse political environment. “…Studies concerned with performance of the GVC network as a whole naturally explore more complex aspects of performance, such as flexibility/dynamism of the production process, access to a wide range of resources, operational efficiency, cohesiveness/connectivity, innovation/ability to transform ideas into commercial products, and sustainability of the GVC over time (Akkermans et al, 1999;Buckley, 2011;Chen, 2003;Colotla, Shi, & Gregory, 2003;Kano, 2018;Karlsson, 2003;Sinkovics et al, 2019;Yamin, 2011;Zhang & Gregory, 2011). Notably, studies in the social sciences group may focus on development and sustainability outcomes of GVC governance, such as industrial/economic development and positive institutional change (e.g., Coe et al, 2004;Fuller & Phelps, 2018;Henderson et al, 2002;Lund-Thomsen & Coe, 2015;Pavlínek, 2018;Yeung, 2016).…”

“…In this section, we combine interview and archival evidence to identify the specific mechanisms that resulted in several frame shifts to allow the introduction of a private sector led certification regime in the RMG sector in Bangladesh post Rana plaza. As mentioned in section 3, we use a flexible pattern matching approach (Sinkovics et al, 2019) to compare the expected pattern with the actual outcome. Table 3 presents the initial and final templates for the private sector frame changes.…”

“…We started with a flexible pattern‐matching approach analyzing the case data according to our analytical framework. Flexible pattern matching allows to further develop an initial analytical template and enables the researcher to develop new theory (Sinkovics, 2018; Sinkovics & Alfoldi, 2012; Sinkovics, Choksy, Sinkovics, & Mudambi, 2019). It allows for the development of new and unexpected dimensions, thereby enabling the revision of prior expected relationships.…”
