Knowledge Management to Support Supply Chain Sustainability and Collaboration Practices

Abstract: This exploratory research examined the contribution of knowledge management (KM) to sustainability and collaboration practices across a number of small to medium size Australian food and beverage exporters. A growing focus on sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) in global supply chains offers opportunities for organizations to create value and secure competitive advantage by employing strategic KM practices to support SSCM. Analysis of eight case study organizations revealed that KM contributes to SSCM a… Show more

“…Indeed, the strategic management of knowledge can act as an enabler of SCM in information and knowledge-intensive global environments to capture value and achieve competitive advantage. Previous research on KM and SCM indicates the various ways in which KM contributes to SCM capabilities through the application of knowledge processes such as knowledge acquisition, sharing, integration, dissemination, collaboration, and innovation (Bhosale & Kant, 2016;Gloet & Samson, 2019;Marra et al, 2012). However, there is less literature concerning the role of KM in supporting SSCM.…”

“…This research is part of a longitudinal study of food and beverage exporters in Australia supported by the Australian Research Council, and an earlier form of this paper appeared in the Proceedings of the Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS 53) in January 2019. Previous research relating to this project includes a focus on KM for the design of supply chains (Gloet & Samson, 2018), as well as the manner in which KM supports sustainability and collaboration in these case organizations (Gloet & Samson, 2019). In this paper, we now turn our attention to the strategic management of knowledge to support innovation in general, and sustainability-oriented innovation in particular within these firms.…”

“…Hence, OEE and OE are key concepts for optimizing SC performance. Finally, there is a growing literature that links SC sustainability to SC performance consisting of (1) economic , (2) environmental , and (3) social goals 32 . However, because of rising dynamics and SC vulnerabilities, the focus on SCM moves to SC risks management to increase SC resilience 33–36 .…”

“…C. The research's aims and software novelty - [8][9][10][11] stress the importance of KM during the SC development process. However, very few attempts were made to develop a functional software to be implemented at the organizational group level, specifically during organizations' SCs.…”
