Knowledge Mapping of Acupuncture for Cancer Pain: A Scientometric Analysis (2000–2019)

Abstract: Objective This study aimed to demonstrate the state of the present situation and trends concerning the global use of acupuncture for cancer pain in the past 20 years. Methods Searched the Web of Science database from 2000 to 2019 related to acupuncture for cancer pain, and then used CiteSpace to conduct scientometric analysis to acquire the knowledge mapping. Results Yearly output has increased year by year, and the growth rate has become fas… Show more

“…Although acupoint stimulation still needs to be incorporated into the cancer palliative care system, we cannot ignore the palliative effect of acupoint stimulation on cancer. For instance, acupoint stimulation is useful not only to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy but also to relieve tumor-related symptoms (including fatigue, insomnia, and cancer pain) and relieve tumor treatment-related side effects [including constipation caused by opioid peptides ( 72 ), lymphedema after breast cancer surgery ( 73 ), and knee pain caused by aromatherapy enzyme inhibitors ( 74 , 75 )]. Taking cancer pain as an example, acupoint stimulation is beneficial for patients with moderate to severe cancer pain.…”

“…Foremost, we input the Web of Science database with English Topic= “migraine”, and TS= “acupuncture” OR “Acupuncture Therapy” OR “Acupuncture, Ear” OR “Acupuncture Points” OR “Acupuncture Analgesia” separately. 22 Next is the parameter setting when retrieving the database, kinds of literature were retrieved online through the Science Citation Index-Expanded of the Web of Science Core Collection on March 1, 2021 23 , and the language of the literature is not limited. The time range of searching is from 2000 to 2019, which is the basis of data analysis. After literature retrieval, a total of 749 kinds of literature were acquired, and 438 records were utilized for bibliometric analysis after Citespace removed duplication.…”

“…The field of basic and clinical pain research is characterized by multiple terms, often by an overlapping of similar pain phenomena for different pain concepts, and by the frequent evolution of pain terminology leading to the difficulty of selecting an appropriate set of documents. A great variation exists in the choice of pain terms: the pain literature is analyzed without any specificity; a large set of pain terms are used; pain synonyms/analogues/related terms (e.g., nociception, analgesia, neuralgia) are employed (30,34,35,47,123); the number of pain terms used may exceed 20 (35, 37, 150) and can be up to 30 (54,79), even though a few studies only use the single word "pain" (80,100,112,140,143). Alternatively, when a specific pain phenomenon is targeted (e.g., fibromyalgia, headache, or low back pain), the choice of painterms is reduced to either one (19,25,108,126,131,133,137,144) or very few (<5) keywords (29,68,69,73,96,155,185).…”

“…(2) The second parameter indicates the targeted population. The general population is targeted for most B/P investigations (25,30,76); however, several studies have restricted their population to patients with cancer (100,126), diabetes (130), some critical illness (65), or depression (102). ( 3) Another important parameter is the geographical limit of the populations studied.…”
