ObjectivesPharmacists are ideal partners for engaging with the needs and expectations of patients. They can play a vital role by providing information and supplying herbal medicines. In some community settings, pharmacists are also the main first point of care. This study explored Jordanian community pharmacists’ perspectives and knowledge of herbal medicines available in pharmacies.DesignA cross-sectional study using an online survey was developed, and it was distributed via social media platforms. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was used to compare the mean knowledge scores between different demographic groups. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify predictors of herbal medicines knowledge.SettingJordanian community pharmacies.Participants401 Jordanian community pharmacists.ResultsHerbal supplements are sold in practically all pharmacies (98.5%). Slimming aids (14.7%), followed by sexual and sports enhancements (14%) and maintaining general health (12.1%) were most requested by Jordanian customers. While supplements for maintaining general health (12%), followed by slimming aids (11.4%) and skin conditions (9.3%) were most recommended by Jordanian pharmacists. 63.1% were not aware of potential herb–drug interactions, 95.6% did not receive complaints from customers about herbal medicines and 41.2% would not report adverse reactions to the national pharmacovigilance services. The mean knowledge score for knowledge of use, regulation, adverse reactions, and drug interactions was 3.7 (SD: 0.7), 3.5 (SD: 0.8), 3.6 (SD: 0.8), and 3.6 (SD: 0.8) (out of 5), respectively. ANOVA test showed that total pharmacists’ knowledge scores significantly differed based on the length of time practising pharmacy (p<0.05).ConclusionThis study highlights some key concerns relating to recommendations, awareness and reporting of herbal medicines among Jordanian community pharmacists. Pharmacists need enhanced education to provide objective and evidence-based information on the benefits–risks of herbal medicines. Future studies need to be carried out to confirm whether our findings are transferable to other Middle Eastern countries.

Background: The undergraduate students in pharmacy colleges represent a well-educated group of the community according to the use of drugs and they are required to hold the appropriate knowledge of drug use and have positive attitudes toward health problems, this good knowledge about the diseases and their treatment will give good pharmacists in the future and this will reflect positively on patient knowledge, and their compliance with treatment, this due to direct contact of pharmacists with the patients. Aim: To know the knowledge, Awareness and Attitude of a sample of Iraqi pharmacy students towards epilepsy. Method: Cross-sectional study used a structured questionnaire validated by previous studies to collect data about knowledge, Awareness and Attitude about epilepsy from all stages of undergraduate pharmacy students, this survey involves 260 respondents from different universities in Iraq. Results: The questionnaire was responded by 260 students. The main part of the respondents were of age group between 21-25 years (84.2%). The majority of the respondents were female (67.3%), and (32.7%) were male. Overall knowledge was moderate (60.1±17.8), awareness was poor (42.6±33.5) but the attitude toward epilepsy was very good (83.3±13.1). Conclusions: The results of this study showed that, majority of the students had knowledge of the disease however, the knowledge score was moderate. While Awareness score was low, we need to have focused education and efforts to increase the knowledge and awareness towards epilepsy among pharmacy students. At the same time the attitudes of pharmacy students toward epilepsy in this study was very good.

Impaired lipid profile is defined as abnormal plasma levels of low‐density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and total cholesterol. This disease state is associated with the development and progression of various disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, and acute myocardial infarction. Globally, all of these disorders are related to a significant rate of death. Therefore, finding a suitable approach for the prevention and treatment of lipid profile‐related disorders is in the spotlight. Recently, herbal therapy has been considered a promising therapeutic approach for the treatment of hyperlipidemia or its related disorders due to its safety and efficacy. Hereby, we address the potential benefits of some of these herbal compounds on different aspects of lipid profile and its abnormalities with a special focus on their underlying mechanisms. Using herbal products, such as teas and mushrooms, or their derivatives, Rosmarinus officinalis Linn, Curcuma longa, Green tea, Lippia triphylla, Lippia citriodora, Plantago asiatica L, Vine tea, and Grifola frondosa have been proved to exert several therapeutic impacts on lipid profile and its related disorders, and we would provide a brief review on them in this literature.
