Known data on applied regenerative medicine in tendon healing

Abstract: Tendons and ligaments are important structures in the musculoskeletal system. Ligaments connect various bones and provide stability in complex movements of joints in the knee. Tendon is made of dense connective tissue and transmits the force of contraction from muscle to bone. They are injured due to direct trauma in sports or roadside accidents. Tendon healing after repair is often poor due to the formation of fibro vascular scar tissues with low mechanical property. Regenerative techniques such as PRP (plate… Show more

“…To date, integrative and regenerative medicine have gained a lot of interest in the field of musculoskeletal degenerative disorders and related pain. 11 , 34 , 57 Particularly, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and MSCs seem to be promising in reducing pain and improving function in osteoarthritic joints. 58 , 59 Recently their use had been suggested also in tendinopathies with debated results.…”

“… 4 10 To this regard, the novel therapeutic options based on the regenerative medicine principles could be a useful tool for the treatment of tendinopathies. 11 Specifically, injections of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) in tendinopathic patients showed good safety and tolerability, assuring encouraging outcomes. 4 However, although the adverse events related to ASCs injections are not serious, they may affect treatment compliance and satisfaction.…”

“…Tendons are dense connective tissue structures, transmitting force of muscular contraction muscle to bones. Tendon injuries are common, hard to cure and often healed with brosis 20 . For best results tendon repair, several remedies such as physical modalities, growth factors, tissue engineering, mechanical stimulation, cell, and gene therapy are proposed.…”

“…Regenerative medicine has been widely applied in the research of liver diseases, [ 71 ] neurodegenerative diseases, [ 72 ] colorectal pathologies, [ 73 ] cardiac repair, [ 74 ] tendon healing, [ 75 ] and so on. The key concept of regenerative medicine is to stimulate and support the body’s own self-healing capacity by cell-based biomaterials (cell suspension, cell sheets, ECM scaffold, etc .).…”
