When asking spider-phobic individuals what they find most frightening about spiders, many report spiders’ unique movement characteristics. Here, we experimentally tested whether spider-specific movements are indeed a major cue in triggering spider fear. One-hundred-and-twenty participants (55 spider-fearful) viewed realistic 3D-animated videos of spiders and ladybugs moving on different paths and with different speeds. We found that spider-fearful individuals perceived spiders as more uncontrollable and unpredictable than ladybugs and non-fearful individuals. This held true to a certain degree even when spiders moved on predictable movement paths. Spiders also elicited more fear and disgust in spider-fearful individuals, which was amplified by curvy movement paths. Finally, spider-fearful individuals reported higher intolerance of uncertainty (IU), which may potentially increase distress in subjectively uncontrollable and unpredictable spider encounters. As far as we are aware, our study provides first experimental evidence of the effects of spider movement on cognition and emotion in spider fear, expanding the current knowledge about fear-related triggers.

In exposure therapy, the degree to which individuals effectively correct their threat expectancies varies considerably. Using appropriate statistical models to capture this variability and investigating potential moderators (i.e. mechanisms of change) of the extinction learning process is therefore important. We hypothesized that a non-linear statistical model would better explain extinction learning trajectories indexed by unconditioned stimulus (US) expectancies than a linear model and that intolerance of uncertainty (IU) might negatively impact extinction. Seventy-one spider-fearful participants completed a two-day realistic virtual reality conditioning paradigm where a spider served as the US. Trial-by-trial US expectancy ratings were collected as the main outcome during acquisition and extinction. We used ordered beta regression in a Bayesian estimation framework to analyze data. As expected, trial-by-trial US expectancy ratings during extinction were substantially better explained by the non-linear ordered beta than a linear statistical model. Non-linear models can therefore more adequately capture interindividual differences in trial-by-trial extinction learning by providing a better fit to such data. However, IU did not moderate US expectancies in our study. Previous research investigating influences of IU on US expectancies produced mixed results, and our study supports the notion that US expectancies are largely insensitive to IU.

Previous work has pointed to the anticipated reaction of the perpetrator of a norm violation (i.e, counterpunishment) as a main discouraging factor of third-party punishment. To date, the only experimental study addressing the impact of counterpunishment (Balafoutas et al., 2014) demonstrated that, indeed, the likelihood of third-party punishment decreased under the risk of counterpunishment. However, the underlying mechanisms of counterpunishment remain unclear. The present research examined two non-mutually exclusive accounts. The effect of counterpunishment could be due to a) the additional material costs counterpunishment imposes on third parties (additional cost account), and/or b) the explicit interpersonal conflict counterpunishment entails, and which people might try to avoid (antagonism aversion account). In two studies (Ns = 443, 1662), we experimentally disentangled these two accounts by comparing the decrease in third-party punishment under risk of counterpunishment and under risk of an algorithm imposing an equivalent cost on third-party punishment. Relative to a baseline condition, third-party punishment similarly decreased across the two experimental conditions (Studies 1 and 2). Importantly, this decrease depended on the magnitude of counterpunishment (Study 2). Our results suggest that, despite the social nature of counterpunishment, its effect should be understood as an effect of material costs on third-party punishment.
