L’expression de la légitimité du pouvoir de Vitellius d’après la typologie monétaire

Abstract

The short-lived emperors of AD 68-69 had to face new difficulties : they did not belong to the julio-claudian family and some of them had been hailed emperors outside Rome. Thus, they had to find a way to legitimate their assumption of power. Vitellius was aware that Galba failed because of his unpopularity. Therefore, Vitellius’ coinage focuses on the legitimacy of his proclamation through the consensus uniuersorum, the creation of a new dynasty and the imitation of Augustus.
